GAME CHANGER: What’s worked for me… and will for you too.

Every morning, around 5:30 a.m., after I go to the bathroom and make coffee, I take about an hour to simply be quiet and work on myself.  I journal, I read, and I meditate or listen to a self-created hypnotic RTT recording.

I do this for several reasons:

  1. It elevates my mood, meaning everything else I do the entire day is better.

  2. It enables me to rewire my own mind for empowering thoughts and beliefs (as opposed to the old, disempowering ones I was walking around with before).

  3. It provides a structure for me to remind myself of what I value most, and where I am headed.

In other words, it sets the stage for my entire life.

When I began meditating about 10 years ago, I was filled with worries. I was very lacking in confidence. I had no idea who I was or what I wanted to do.  One thing I knew for sure I wanted: I wanted very badly to control other people so that I could feel better.

Fast forward 10 years… I rarely get worried about shit and am full of peace, most of the time.  I am full of self confidence.  I know exactly who I am and what I want. And I have let go of any inclination at all that I can control anyone else.  But I do feel enormous power over my own internal state. And THAT is where true power lies.

In other words, as a result of my morning routine, I have changed.  And because I have changed, that means my whole life has changed too.

We simply CANNOT change our lives if we don’t consistently work with our thoughts.  Going to a therapist once a week is simply not enough; we must practice every single day.

If you’d like to build a morning routine to change your life too, here are some suggestions:

  1. Start small and really short. Like 10 minutes.

  2. Do your absolute best to do it every day. When you are starting a new habit, it needs to be consistent for it to stick.

  3. Do something you enjoy, whether it’s simply drinking a cup of coffee with your dog in your lap or reading an inspiring book.

  4. Go somewhere that’s quiet and you won’t be disturbed.  And keep your phone off 🙂

  5. If you want to meditate, there are so many apps you can use!  I’m a huge fan of headspace because they explain exactly how to do it, and you can choose super short ones to begin.

  6. Be compassionate with yourself. It’s hard to make changes, and beating yourself up doesn't help.

Even though I’ve never been “a morning person” (it takes me an hour to wake up), the early morning is now my favorite time of day because it makes me feel soooo much better.  It can do the same for you.
